Employers are required by law to meet certain obligations when obtaining, handling or using workers' personal information. Recently, the law on data protection was tightened with the introduction of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which came into force directly in the UK on 25 May 2018. At the same time as the GDPR came into force, the government replaced the Data Protection Act 1998 with a new Act, the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018), to reflect the new and enhanced requirements and increased enforcement measures, as well as setting out in more detail the requirements in relation to the processing of workers' personal data.
