There are many commercial and organisational advantages to the use of internet and e-mail at work, but there are also risks and liabilities associated with employee use of these tools, including viruses, legal claims, unauthorised access and inadvertent formation of contractual obligations. The introduction of a policy on such use can serve to minimise the risk to the employer by setting out clear guidelines and restrictions. Breach of the e-mail and internet policy should be made a disciplinary offence. The employer should monitor use to ensure compliance, although there may be restrictions on its right to do so.
