Both zero-hours and gig economy workers have unpredictable and variable working patterns. Most work part-time and many may have more than one job. Both models offer no guarantee of work. In the gig economy, work accepted and performed is normally paid per piece, such as a set rate to deliver a package or drive a fare to a location, while zero-hours contract engagements are usually paid hourly with no set minimum. While many employed as either a zero-hours or gig worker appreciate the flexibility such work relationships can bring, businesses have been finding themselves in hot water if, when looking at the reality of the situation, a tribunal finds that such an individual is actually an employee (when they were purported to be only a worker) or a worker (when they were purported to be a self-employed contractor in business for their own account).
