Where an employer cannot provide work to an employee, it may, as a temporary measure and where permitted by the contract of employment, lay off the employee or put them on short-time working until normal levels of work resume. Employees are considered to be laid-off where they have not been provided with any work by their employer on a temporary basis. They are considered to be working on a short-time basis where they have been laid-off for a set number of contractual days each week or if the number of hours they work during a working day has been reduced.
