Dealing with an expectant or new mother

  • Be aware that an employee must notify you that she is pregnant, when her expected week of childbirth (EWC) is and when she intends to start her maternity leave by no later than the end of the 15th week before her EWC.
  • Ensure you comply with your duty to respond in writing within 28 days to an employee who has notified her intention to take maternity leave. Confirm when her maternity leave will end and the date she is expected to return to work if she takes her full one-year leave entitlement.
