Avoiding discrimination and harassment claims

  • UK law (the Equality Act 2010) recognises nine types of unlawful discrimination: Discrimination because of age, disability, gender reassignment, race (including colour, nationality and ethnic or national origins), religion or belief (including a lack of religion or belief), sex, sexual orientation, marriage (including same sex marriage) and civil partnership and pregnancy and maternity. These are known as the “protected characteristics”.
  • Be aware that the discrimination legislation protects job applicants, employees (regardless of length of service) and a wider category of worker.
