Introduction

Although sickness absence rates have fallen overall in recent years it is still, by far, the biggest single workplace problem that employers face. Aside from the disruption and lost productivity that it causes, there are financial consequences too. Most obvious is the direct cost of sick pay which can be broadly broken down into two categories: statutory sick pay (SSP) and company sick pay (also known as contractual sick pay or discretionary sick pay where the employment contract includes an employer discretion as to whether it is paid).
