Chapter 4 - The fit note regime

4.1. Introduction

Prior to 6 April 2010, when an employee suffered from an illness or condition that had an impact on their ability to work, the only option available to a GP was a “sick note”. The main difficulty with this system was its inflexibility; more often than not an employee would be signed off as sick when they were, in fact, able to undertake some or all of their duties with (or without) adaptations.
